It's been a long time, but I've got some updates for ya.
While I've been on my art hiatus, I did a lot of work for this dude ice cream social. I did some artwork and a logo, and a remix and a bunch of other stuff.
The album is a concept album, and this is a map I did of the world that the album takes place in.
This was the final album cover. The album is related to video games, so I did all the artwork in this kind of 8-bit style.

Five Fucking Hundred

The big 500. I let a lot of the other big milestones slip by rather unnoticed, but I felt like I had to do something big for 500. I've been doing this blog now for close to 4 years which is kind of crazy to me. I still remember when I started it, and I can't believe it's something I'm still thinking about and working on day to day. So to celebrate this momentous occasion, I decided to do a little bit of a nwu retrospective. I did a new drawing from pretty much all my major creations. Have a look, I think this is the most original material I've done for a blog post so far.
Neworld: The original. The namesake. Also by far the longest running comic in NWU history. Looking back it's kind of terrible, and very obviously my first comic. But it will always hold a special place in my brain. This is probably the first Neworld drawing I've done since the Water Closet art book a couple years back.Water Closet: Starkly contrasted from Neworld, I came up with Water Closet to quench my comic book ADD. After working on Neworld for like 2 years, I really wanted to do something that was all over the place, and kind of crazy. In hindsight the writing wasn't great in these comics, but I remember the insane creativity I felt while I was working on this series. You might notice a couple people are missing. I just ran out of steam working on this post and I couldn't draw anything for Monkey Shines, maybe it will be a little bonus tomorrow or something.
Sam: The comic that never really was. It felt like I worked on this series forever, but in reality I never actually put an actual issue out of this series. I might want to revisit this series just for fun and do another short story or something. I've still got the first issue of the series written, and the rest of the first arc plotted, but I doubt I'll ever get around to doing it. After I wrote it, I just didn't feel like I could do the the material justice. I should really post the early years on the website, I think it's still just floating around the blog right now.Iatrogenesis: The next comic in a long line of perpetually unfinished concepts, I do believe that this comic works pretty well as a single issue though. To be honest this one wasn't all my fault. I'm not sure exactly what happen with Iatro. Me and Devin talked about the second issue a lot, but he just never got around to writing it. We had a lot of cool ideas for the series as a whole, and it's a little dissapointing we never got to see them all the way through, but thems the brakes. I loved working on this series. I had a ton of fun collaborating, with Devin. After doing all my comic work up to that point by myself, it was so rewarding to work with someone else. The really limited color pallet was really fun to work with. I loved being able to color pages so quickly, but they still looked awesome. The first couple pages in the psychiatrist office are still some of my favorite pages ever.
Maladroits: I'd been reading Zuda since it's inception, and I always wanted to submit something for it, but didn't want to use any of the ideas I was already working on, so when I came up with the basic idea for Maladroits, I knew it would be perfect for Zuda. It was a little a disappointing not to win (and place so low), but I've found that most of the best comics are the one that place the lowest on Zuda. It was a great ride while it lasted. This was me and Devin's second collaborations. Even though Devin's role was more limited in this one, he was very helpful for bouncing ideas off of. A lot of the ideas I had for the future of Maladroits actually ended up helping to get me to the point where I am now for Northpark.
Northpark Underground: The current incarnation of the NWU. I've already said a ton about this comic in the blog, so I'll keep this brief, but this is definitely the best comic for me right now, and definitely includes the best work I've done thus far. Writing and art wise. It's on hiatus from it right now, but hopefully will be coming back soon.

I left a couple things out namely, Hungry, McKluskey's Miracle Men, OZC, Primary in Private and Billy's Adventurer's Club (probably a couple others). I just didn't have the drive to try and do everything. If this happens to be your first time at the blog, and your confused by all this stuff, you can read all these comics over HERE.

There are a lot of factors that include all the music projects I'm working on, I've got a little bit of writers and creative block, and I'm not gonna lie Final Fantasy 13. Right now I just feel like I'd be forcing myself to make Northpark, and for me that's not the best way to get good results. Hopefully it will be back soon.

Another sketch from the trip. This is of my favorite child-hood stuffed animal. I did a bunch of pencil drawings all around it, but didn't really come up in the scan, so i futzed with the contrast and color balance to bring it out. Casting Northpark

So I had a weird idea to cast Northpark Underground. This may be the nerdiest thing I've done on my blog. Oh well. Here's what I came up with.
Seth Rogen as Greg. This one is a little obvious, and it wouldn't be his normal character, but I actually think he would be great as Greg.
Shannyn Sossamon as Tess. I haven't seen that many of her movies, but her character in wristcutters is pretty much what Tess acts like. Also I'm pretty sure I was watching A Knights Tale while redesigning her hairstyle.
DaveFranco as Tad. This guy is by far the best pick out of the whole thing. He was like born to play Tad. I'm almost positive I stole that smile for Tad.
Joel Moore as Zak. Probably the weakest cast, and I feel like Zak would be a little better looking than this guy. But I always felt like Zak should be tall and kind of gawky, and this guy is.

I hope that was fun for everyone.

Hard at work

The blog has been a little light lately. Doesn't mean I haven't been working though. I'm already almost done with the next section of Northpark. The blog will most likely continue to be a little light for a while unfortunately, as I'm going to be extremely busy this week. I've got a hockey game, final fantasy is coming out, and I'm going on vacation for a couple days at the end of the week. But hopefully I'll have of the new section done by the time I leave.

I hadn't done any good drawings for the blog in a while, so I decided do this. I was very inspired by the promo material for the new Gorillaz album Plastic Beach (which is phenomenal by the way). I think I'll do another post of Gorillaz some time in the future. Thinking about doing a duel post where I talk about their art in this blog, and their music in the wolves blog.

Hungry?

The story of Hungry is a long one. Last year around May or June I was contacted about working on an anthology project called Bizarre Mysteries. They had seen Maladroits on Zuda and thought I might be able to do something interesting for them. After talking to them, they decided they wanted to pursue a Zuda release. So they sent me the script and I said I'd do it. I actually ended up doing the project really quickly. I did the whole thing in just a couple weeks, and sent it off to them.

It was right around comic-con time when stuff was finishing up with the project and they took it to Zuda and showed it to them at the con. Zuda seemed interested, but wanted to them to submit it through the normal process with the anthology project in mind. They contacted me and told me that they actually wanted to lead with my story, so they would be submitting hungry as the actual pitch. So we sent it off. And then we waited for a long time.

Eventually they got back to me and said that even though they liked the idea of the project, the logistics of getting all the artist and writers paid would be a nightmare, and that they were going to have to pass. This sucked, but Sam Little who wrote the story suggested that we just expand the story an extra page (the original story was only 7 pages because the original concept was to have an introductory page with a sort of crypt creeper type character introduce each story). I did the extra page which you can now see as the first page. We sent it off, and after waiting another fairly long amount of time they declined again. My guess is that they knew this that we were just recycling story and we would be forcing it to be a ongoing.

It was a very long process, and it sucks that nothing ever came of it, but you win some you loose some. But now you can finally read it. Check out a Hungry HERE.

Here are the close-ups for section 2.3. Or as I like to call it, the zombie section! A long while ago (back after I finished the water closet) I wanted the first issue of the second volume to be called OZC, which was going to be my zombie comic. It was a crazy idea about having the main character be a zombie who was smarter than all other zombies, but enough about that, in the end I decided to scrap the idea, but I still really wanted to do a story about zombies. So here it is. I got to draw a ton of zombies and it was a ton of fun. Even though technically these did Zombies didn't follow the rules set up by Romero.

For the past year and a half I've been working on this album called Journey & Destination, and it's finally come to an end. I finished it. It's a blend of electro and rock and it makes for a pretty interesting sound. The Track listing is as follows:

I just posted a new song the other day, and it's got some of the old demos from the album up there.I recorded about 14 songs while writing this record, and since I only put 9 on the actual album I've got a lot of leftovers. Before I put out the actual album I'm going to release a sort of sampler called Distortion & Compression that I'll post for free on my website. It will have all the B-Sides and some alternate versions of the songs on J&D. I don't have a track list nailed down for this album yet, but that's the artwork.

THE ZOMBIE! SECTION

The close ups for sect 2.2. Got some interesting ones here. I love the bear playing drums and every time I can fit chip into a panel is a good time. As promised here are all the references.

References (in order of appearance):

-The big poster on the wall in Greg’s house is supposed to be the Darjeeling Litmited poster. I have a full size one in my room.

-The band playing is called Mammal Amalgamation. I thought the band that Tad played in should be something like Animal Collective, but way crazier, so that’s where I got the name from.

-Greg’s sweatshirt sports a tiny logo of a GJ symbol. Which is the symbol for the band Glassjaw, which was my favorite band growing up. I always felt an affinity to the logo since it had the G in it.

-The bouncer’s name is Kris. This is a very insider reference to the fact that a lot of my other friends thought I based the Bouncer off my friend Chris. Even though it wasn’t originally on purpose, I decided to keep the joke going.

-The manager’s look is based off the electro DJ Steve Aoki. I did change his hair and made him French though.

-The lyrics in the song that the lead singer is singing is a very vague reference to the Beatles song I Am the Walrus.

-The sound guy who gets yelled at is based off my bud Devin who had a very similar experience happen to him.

I think that’s all of them. Also do me a favor and go and vote for Phantom Sword over at Zuda.com. I still check it out every month, and am almost always disappointed because the story I want to win almost never does. This month this one at least has a chance, so do it. Thanks in advance.

Sect 2.2 is up (finally)

Well the much delayed section 2.2 is up now. Check it out HERE! Sorry about the delays. If you go to the website and read the news section I explain why the section was so heavily delayed. But on to more interesting things. The section is up and I think it's one of the best yet. This section is chalk full of little references, some of them are inside joke types of things and some of them are pretty easy to figure out. I think in the next post I'll tell as many as I can remember. See how many you can find.

GYAKUSHU

One of my favorite artists Dan Hipp is launching a second blog to promote/release the 3rd volume of his graphic novel Gyakushu, and he's got a thing going where he wants people to post Gyakusu artwork on blogs and websites to help get the word out. So I felt obliged to help. I have been a huge fan of Dan Hipp and Gyakushu for a long time. In fact looking back I just mentioned a quote i read from him a couple of posts ago. When the site goes live it should go up HERE!

I also decided to do a drawing of a couple of characters from Gyakusu, and post the sketch Hipp did for me at comic-con a couple years back. It's probably the best sketch I've gotten from an artist, and Rob Guillory was really into it when he saw it.

Sect 2.1 Layouts

Well, this seems to be the second section curse because today I decided to install Windows 7 and now I have to reinstall all my programs, and at the moment I don't even have any adobe products so I'm a little sceptical I'm going to make the second due I set. Room Sounds 2

A couple years ago I did a project were I took things in my room and turned them into beats and music and recorded more stuff with synthesizers and keyboards then mashed it together and called it room sounds. It was really different than the music I was making music in Who-Rey-Grad at the time so I came up with a solo name of Volunteer Musician. I never really went to back to that style until recently.

A couple months ago I started recording these one person jam sessions where I took basically all the instruments I have, as well as creating really mangled samples and ran everything into my DJ mixer and then looped them and put tons of delay and echo on them so they're all playing continuously. It results in a pretty interesting sound. I also readopted my old name (minus the musician part) because it's so different from the music I'm making under the name wolves of saint august. I decided I'll probably want to release them in some fashion at some point so I did a cover for them (it's picture up there). So stayed tune for more info on this project in the future.

Here is your daily print update. Got one issue in the bag. And I'm working on the second one. I ended up doing a whole nother round of revisions on the comic. I tweeked another 10 pages or so. As for my palns for the rest of the week. I'm probably gonna take a break after tomorrow, and do the rest on saturday and sunday. And as promised yesterday here is the process for the cover.Here is the original sketch. I drew two or three designs, and fooled around with a bunch of other artwork before I came to this design. I actually flipped through some art books and web stuff till I remembered the cover that fabio moon did for the Myspace Dark Horse presents (link). And decided I wanted to do something like that. I remember reading this thing Dan Hipp wrote about doing covers where he said that the less colors you use the more it stands out, and that's always stuck with me, and decided I just wanted to do a two color type thing, which is when I came up with this sort of cascading idea, which I think turned out pretty well.
I wanted to include the just inked page because there is actually a ton of little details in the piece that kind of gets drowned in the colored back ground. Take a close look to see if you can find all the little references to the first chapter.

This cover may be my favorite thing that I've drawn for Northpark thus far. I think it turned out really great, and it's going to look really good on the stands. I'll post some of the process from the cover tomorrow. As far as production goes. I got a comp done. There is still a lot of fixing I have to do before it's ready to print, but it's really cool to see it all printed out. I can't wait to get back to work on it again tomorrow. Here are some pics of the comp.

I've turned the Neworld production office into the NWU printing press. I'm working on a comp copy of Chapter 1 of Northpark. I'm still planning on drawing a new cover for it first.

Now for a little process update. I've thought it over, and I think I'm gonna post pone section 2.2 an extra week. This is because I'm going to participate in the indie comics week at the end of the month. I'm going to be making some some hand made issues of the first chapter of Northpark. Because of this. I don't think I'll be able to get the next section out in the 2 weeks I originally allotted. I'm going to be reworking a couple of the pages, and doing a brand new cover as well as some supplemental material. This is going to be a long process, and I don't have a whole lot of time so here's hoping. I'll keep you updated as I work.

Here's another process picture in the Mario Painting. I added the rest of the colors and started adding in the background. Now I've just got to finish the back ground, and retrace some of the black lines, and I'm done. I should have a finished product soon. And here's a picture of my room and my stuff.
