Pages 005 006 007

Due to an oversight in scheduling I will not be able to post the remaining pages a day at a time for the remainder of the week. I somehow forgot I was going to be on vacation those days. So here are the last 3 pages. Sorry no commentary. And I won't be posting on the blog for about a week. Sorry. See you in a week.

Page 004

This is by far the most experimental page of the issue. This page also went through a lot of changes. You can see all the process I did for it on a previous post. I really liked how this page turned out. I'm definately gonna work with this kind of layout in the future. A little cool thing I tried was putting the one panel in a circle and then referencing it in the next panel. To show that it's Sam again. I also thought the line with June saying I like exploring was pretty funny as well.

Page 003

Hey! Page 3 here. This was a first. This was the first page I ever fully redrew. I just really did not like the other one I did. It wasn't particularly bad. It just didn't match what I wanted it to show, and the line consistency was off. This page was made to show how much bigger the monster is than Sam. I think this page did that well.

Page 002 / wonders of wacom

Here's the second page. I'm actually not really in love with this page. I like the bottom panel. Especially the type part. I tried a bunch of different applications of the type, and this was definately the best one. The shadowing at the top was a little off.
I got a wacom tablet for christmas, here are some digital drawings I did this morning.

Page 001 / Christmas Kicks Ass

So it's christmas eve, but your gonna get your christmas gift early. Here is page 1 of Sam Antecedent Monsters:
The first page. I like how this page turned out. The idea behind this page was to leave some mystery to the page. So after the first page you couldn't really tell what was going on. Just some really out of context image that slowly gets explained.

Unused 2

Here's another cover that I did that I don't think I'm gonna use. I don't know why, but I don't seem to like any of the covers I've been doing.

Saturday, December 22, 2007

Yo wRAPS!

So every year I make some specialty wrapping paper for my christmas gifts. This year I didn't make any new designs or illustrations, but I did use some stuff I did for previous projects and retooled them christmas time. If you want to use them yourself here are the files (sorry lo-res).

100

HEYO! post 100. Seems like it came faster than I thought. I've got a big annoucement this time as well (not as big as last time though). Check this:I've almost completed the next volume of Sam. And I'm going to be running it just like I did last time. A week long, a page a day with commentary. It's starts christmas eve and ends new years eve. P.S. this little promo add can also be used as a wallpaper, I sized it exactly. And for another extra on the 100th post, I'm gonna show you a page that I'm actually discarding from the issue.

This is the first page I've ever actually cut. I just really did not like how it turned out. It's not terrible, but I really think I can do better. Hopefully you'll see a new version when I put the issue out.

Back to Work

So I'm back in San Jose. I've got everything all set up now, and I've started working again. Hopefully I'll have the new Sam story done in a couple days. I'm feeling like I've got to redraw some of the page stuff, so it might take longer than I thought.

foggy is GOD!

If you ever wonder why anything happened in any comic book universe, look no further than Foggy Nelson. He is the all seeing all powerful God of everything. Fat Lawyer from Hell's kitchen? NO! He is the uber being. All praise the foggy!

Here are a list of his great accomplishments:
1. Foggy craps Cosmic Cubes after his morning coffee.

2. Foggy can shatter adamantium.

3. Superman is weak to Foggy Nelson.

4. Foggy killed Thomas and Martha Wayne. And Captain America. And Sue Dibny. And Oliver Queen. And Uncle Ben. In short, he is responsible for every death ever written.

5. Every time a bell rings, an Angel gets banged by Foggy.

6. Foggy is responsible for the multiverse.

7. Foggy was John Holmes' penis double.

8. If Captain Marvel's magic word was "FOGGY!", everyone in a ten mile radius would instantly develop God-like powers.

9. Foggy created the Anti-Life Equation.

10. Foggy created the Infinity Gauntlet.

11. before apocalypse goes to bed at night, he checks underneath for foggy nelson. (Courtesy of PJ1336)

12. Foggy Nelson has beaten Thor numerous times in a hand to hand combat. Once even in the Ultimate Fighting Ring the Octagon. (courtesy of middlenameboom)

13. Daredevil's powers were not caused by chemicals but when Foggy Nelson accidently sprayed Matt Murdock with his urine. (courtesy of warpspeedchewy)

14. After the most recent Secret War, every hero thinks that Nick Fury went into hiding. This is untrue. Unless you mean he went into hiding in Foggy Nelson's digestive system. In that case, he definitely went into hiding. (Courtesy of Fluke182)

15. In the early 1990's, Marvel began making trading cards with power levels on the back of them. The highest rated characters were the Celestials, rating off the charts on every category. Marvel almost included Foggy Nelson, but decided that the power level of "Makes Celestials look like little girls" was too insulting to Foggy, and fearing his wrath did not include him. (Courtesy of Fluke182)

16. In the Marvel Zombies universe, there is no Zombie Foggy Nelson. Why? Foggy Nelson does not get eaten, he eats you.

17. Captain America looks up to Foggy Nelson as a father figure. (Courtesy of warpspeedchewy)

18. Foggy Nelson is actually the Third Kryptonian. (Courtesy of PJ1336)

19. Scientists secretly tried to clone Foggy Nelson years ago. It was only a partial success, as it was an imperfect, flawed, and weak, clone. But it still killed Superman.

20. Foggy canceled Arrested Development.

Praise FOGGY!

Monster Progess

This is a look at my page process. Here's a step by step process on this page.

Step 1: Rough Sketch. Most of the time I skip this step, but this was a particularilly difficult page, so I had to sketch it first.
Step 2: Next is the pencils. Usually at this step I draw out the panels, but this page ended up not having panels.
Step 3: Inks. This is where I really flesh out how the page is gonna look.
Step 4: Digital retouches. Sometimes I don't need to do much for this step. Sometimes I change the whole page. This page had a lot of changes. I pretty much had to move around every element on the page, and I added the circle and the arrow.
Step 5: Colors & Halftones. I'm not great at coloring so I make up for it by doing all those cool halftones patterns. For Sam every color has some sort of Halftone pattern.
Step 6: Type. I feel like is a big part of Sam. This page doesn't have any really exciting type, but I think this type worked well with this page. I really thought about type placement when I layed this page out. I think the type really fleshed out the page.

Progress

Here was one of the covers I was working on. I wasn't particularly pleased with it. Who knows I might use it. I've got a bunch of other ideas going on. So hopefully those will turn out better. Maybe this will be an alternative cover, or something.
Monsters is coming along really well. I'm about half done. I'm thinking I am gonna release it for a week here. Also Check out my DeviantART if you haven't seen the cover to it yet.

cover notes

Here's a little sketch of what the cover is gonna look like. I thought even this sketch looked great. There are also some notes on how I wanted certain things to work.

Sketch Monster

I've going to fricking town on comics today. I already did two story pages for the new Sam story, as well as the cover, and a filler page. The story is coming along nicely. I'm trying some new things art wise. Look for this story in the near future, it's called: Antecedent Monsters. I'm thinking about doing what I did with Blades and Bullets where, I post a page a day here, and talk about them. We'll see.

Cover

I've got a bunch of really cool ideas going for the covers for Sam, and I'm working on those right now. While I was sitting in class on Friday (guarding peoples portfolios) I did sketches for a bunch possible covers that had been rattling around in my head. These are those. Check here and my Deviant art Page next week for some of the finished covers.

The Show

So if you've been paying attention to my blog at all the last couple of weeks, you probably know that today was the big SDSU fall show. I finished my Graphic Design Portfolio and displayed it (it seemed to go over really well), but more importantly to this blog, it was essentially the big launch of Neworlduniverse comics.
I had posters and comics for sale (sam and iatrogenesis). I was gonna take a picture of my section after the show was over, but it seemed a little pointless since I sold out of everything! Yes, it seemed almost like my area was ransacked by Mongolians, all 7 comics and 10 posters were sold. Plus I also gave away one of the hand versions of the water closet (well I traded it for a T-Shirt). Even all of the little promo cards were taken. Overall the launch was a big success. It couldn't have gone over better. Hopefully I'll get another chance to sell stuff in the near future.
Also tomorrow it's back to the grindstone. I plan to start doing page work again tomorrow (i've been really neglecting it lately because of the show and school). I'm starting work on the second Sam short story, and then after that I'll finish the first issue of Iatrogenesis. So look for those in the future.
One last thing. Two of my friends had really cool stuff at the show as well. Here are some links to there sites:

To Do List

First off . Here are some sketches I did in class today while I was killing time. It's got a to do list, and some sketches for Iatro. Speaking of, I just finished the first Iatrogenesis preview, so it looks like they will definately be appearing at the fall show. I'll have a full list of the stuff I'll have on sale and be giving away at the show on here tommorrow.

Poster Goodness

So here is the second poster I'm going to be selling at the SDSU fall show. There are 5 copies of this one, and 5 of the other one. Look for them in a multitude of colors.
I'm in full fall show gear right now. Trying to get everything finished and printed. I printed another hand version of a Water Closet Comic. Only one more to go. I also sent my graphic design portfolio to the bindery today, so now that, that is over and done with I'll have more time to focus on the blog, and comics in general. More tomorrow.

I was gonna save this, but WTF her is cover for Iatrogenesis. There you go.

Teaser

This is a little teaser for Iatrogenesis. I've been working on the cover, and this is kind of pieces of the cover. Look for the full cover in the next couple days.

Unused

This was gonna be the cover to the first issue of Iatrogenesis, but I thought it was way too goofy. So i'm gonna re-draw it.

More Print

So in case you don't know. I'm gonna have a little booth/section/i'm not sure what, at the SDSU fall show. It looks like I'm gonna be selling limited edition posters. All signed and numbered, and every poster comes in a different color. I'm also going to be selling the Sam short story Blades and Bullets, also I think it will come with an insert of the Ivory Rose. I'm also gonna try to have some of the specialty printed versions of the Water Closet on hand to read.

Poster Sketch

Sorry, it's been a long time (almost a week), but I finally got something new up. Here is a sketch of a poster I'm working on for the fall show. Look for the full version soon.

Color

Here's the color version. I love this page.

Monday, November 19, 2007

Black & White

Here is a black and white version of the first page of Iatrogenesis. I was a little skeptical of how this was gonna turn out at first, but I've already done the color version, and it looks so cool. Not to toot my own horn or anything, but it looks very good.

Palette

To most people this is going to be the lamest post you've ever seen, but it's a very important post process wise. This is the working color palette. I may change the color palette for each issue. I've got some very cool ideas about how color is going to work in this series. I think for the most part each page will be monochromatic. The colors will help express point of view, and what the main character is seeing. In the past I haven't thought a whole lot about color so this will really add another whole element to the story telling.

More Iatro

Oh Yah, It's happening.

The Ivory Rose

This is something I started a while ago. I got a lot of it done in the first day or two, but then it took me forever to finish it. I think it turned out amazing. It's one of the the best things I think I've done. You can read the full story here. Sorry it's on Deviant and not here, I just didn't want to do that whole page a day thing again. I hope this makes up for the lack of updates.

P.S. Me and Devin have the first issue all worked out for Iatrogenesis. I'm gonna start working on pages very soon.

Thursday, November 15, 2007

Photography

Again, sorry for the immense lack of updates, unfortunately it probably wont get better. Here are some photos Devin took for Iatrogenesis. They look good. I need to figure out what all I'm gonna do with them.

Inception

Here is the logo for the new Sam short series, that talks about the origins of the Sam universe. The first 4 page short story is almost done. Look for that soon.

Re-iatro

Check some more sketches for George the main character of Iatro. Me and Devin went out and did some shooting for the project. It's coming along really nicely. I talked to Devin about doing some of the drawings himself. He seemed a tad apprehensive, but I think I'll get him to come around. I know I've posted a lot of sketches for this, but I think me and Devin both agree the is is really the direction we want to go in for the main character George. Hopefully I'll have even more info on Iatro tommorrow.

P.S. I've got some big news on the Sam front as well.

Type

So me and Devin had a Pow Wow about what's going on with Iatrogenesis. Through some miss communication on my part apparently I never sent him my final revisions of the script (which I thought I had) so nothing much had been going on with the project. But we got back on target. I sent him some more sketches I had done, and he loved those (I'll post those tomorrow). We have plans to work on more stuff tomorrow. I should be posting more about this project in the coming days. And last but not least enjoy a super fancy version of the Iatrogenesis logo.
